Long Island Creek Site 2A

Conclusion

The site is affirmed by physical and bacterial parameters to be listed as 'impaired' as indicated on the Georgia EPD 303d Impaired Waters list. There is a metal pipe running through this sight and this pipe is believed to be a sewage pipe. With every heavy rain more dirt is eroding from around this pipe leaving it with less and less support. This could lead to added stress on this pipe and possibly even a crack forming. The banks on both sides of the creek show signs of erosion due to most of the water in the creek coming from fast moving rain runoff. At the beginning of our observations there was a good flow in the creek because there had been a heavy rain the day before. By the time we went back for our final observation there was not even enough flow to test discharge. Finally this creek is at the base of a backyard with a slope of 20-30 degrees. This backyard also holds at least five large dogs, which causes a large amount of fecal matter to be washes into the creek with every rain. There is also the concern of a potential sewage contamination from the metal pipe running parallel in the middle of the stream into the concrete culvert.
